Innovative and emerging practices
In a variety of jurisdictions, occupational therapists have been involved in new models of interprofessional service delivery with paramedics that are targeted to reduce the number of ER visits. The paramedic and occupational therapist team is dispatched exclusively to 911 calls from seniors who have fallen.
Oasis Senior Supportive Living is a novel seniors-driven model of aging-in-place designed by seniors for seniors. The Oasis program supports seniors with health care, exercise classes, meals, social events and other services while living in their own apartments. Queen’s University researchers Catherine Donnelly, an associate professor at the School of Rehabilitation Science at Queen’s university, and Vincent DePaul, are leaders of the Oasis model expansion and evaluation project. Occupational therapy scholars Lori Letts from McMaster University, Carri Hand, Debbie Laliberte-Rudman and Colleen McGrath from Western University are involved in the Oasis expansion project.
