Navigating later life changes

To grow older means to experience many life changes that effect our identities, our roles and the way we do things. Occupational therapists can help us manage these changes.

Thinking about work and retirement

While many of us impatiently await retirement, some of us experience growing uncertainty about it. Others are eager to remain in the workforce despite advancing age. Occupational therapists can support us to stay in the workforce, manage shifting worker roles or, plan for a successful retirement.

Participating in the community

Decisions such as whether to age in place or move to a more supported living environment can weigh heavily on our minds. Occupational therapists can help us navigate the available options if and when we need to redefine ‘home’. By helping us remain comfortable, safe and secure in our homes, engage as valued older adults in our communities, connect to supportive friendship circles or provide care to others in need, occupational therapists can support us to live and participate in our communities.

Staying connected as roles and relationships change

As we grow older, we experience changes to our social connections. Occupational therapists can help us stay connected, and find meaning, purpose, fulfilment, and belongingness in the process.

Managing changing health status

Many of us experience changes to our health and our ability to manage everyday tasks as we age. A growing appreciation for the impermanence of life may help us focus on what is most important. Occupational therapists can help us stay emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically well to enjoy later life opportunities for personal growth, and to appreciate the certainty and meanings of our life’s eventual closing.
